How to Interpret Your Performance
For the actual exam, your essay will be graded holistically by two raters using the six-point scale above. Holistic grading means that the raters use their informed judgment about the overall quality of your essay rather than a detailed analysis. For example, they do not count the errors in your paper. There is no guarantee that your results on the actual test will be the same as they are on this practice tutorial.
A rating of 6 or 5 indicates that your writing is acceptable. A rating of 4 or 3 means that you probably need to work more on your writing skills. A rating of 2 or 1 indicates that you might benefit from taking a writing course at IUP such as College Writing.
There is no score that is considered “passing.” Your essay score will be combined with your multiple-choice score; a higher score on one will offset a lower score on the other. Moreover, the overall passing score for the entire test is re-calibrated for each administration of the test and cannot be determined in advance. The best that you can do is to try your best on each part. The rating scale and the model essays offer a guideline.
So relax, try your best, and good luck!
